I Heart 60,000,000 year old Dinosaur Fossils

Today, Bede writes about his pet peeve of being asked "Why don't Catholics believe in evolution?" If you want me to spit nails, try posing the same question to me as well. Keep in mind, though that spitting nails is hard on my throat.

Believe what you like. Really. Just don't misrepresent Catholic (or any other) theology. Claiming that Catholic theology refutes evolution is like saying that Judaism refutes chocolate pudding.

This is a timely post as my Yahoo homepage had a story not an hour ago about how one of the cardinals (I forget already) said that if you ignore science you run the risk of becoming fundamentalists. Pretty much answers that question doesn't it.

Yes, and I never heard anyone say that Catholics didn't believe in evolution - that one's a new mabgling to me. I have to admit, though, there are a couple of things that I have always considered the Church's stance on to be pretty jiving with science that the new Pontiff (sp?) seems to be backing away from a disturbing little slant...don't want to debate his theology, of course, but I am all for the paeceful co-existence of science and religion, too. I love the scene at the end of Inherit The Wind when Drummond picks up The Descent of Man and the Bible, weighs them in his hands, puts them together, puts them both in his pack, and leaves.

Showing my ignorance, I once asked a Catholic priest a similar question, "What about the dinosaurs?". He gave me a knowing chuckle, and said, "We're not fundamentalists."

Give me your wallet or else I’ll explain the concept of irreducible complexity!
