Snowdrop Baby

I have enjoyed looking at the nature tables in my daughter's school, but it was only after visiting a friend's house during a Halloween party and admiring all of the various felted dollies and accessories she'd collected over the years that I decided we needed a similar space in our own house. In lieu of a whole table, I've cleared a shelf on our hutch to celebrate the changing of the seasons. We had our Autumn setup for four weeks in which Lucia was able to enjoy the ginkgo leaf doll I stitched based on the snowdrop and crocus dolls made by Buttercupcorner. Now, Winter is coming, and we have both a King Winter and a Santa Lucia figure. I'll post a photo when the nature table is complete. In the meantime, I would like to share with you a snowdrop baby I stitched from a kit ordered from Dancing Rain Dolls:

The thimble next to the snowdrop baby is to show scale. I plan to make other flower dolls in the future based on the pattern for this one, but I've ordered cloth in different skin tones, because as we've discussed before, fairies, root children and bulb babies aren't all blonde-haired and blue-eyed. The kit I received came with blue and blonde thread for the snowdrop baby, but I wanted the doll to look more like my daughter, who has brown hair and brown eyes. (You can find the original model here.)

How wonderful. This takes me back to second grade, Mrs. Kalin. I played Santa Lucia in the winter play. I wore all white. Thanks for retrieving the memory.

Your snowdrop baby is lovely! We're busy with holiday making over here ourselves--wee folk from Salley Mavor's book--and look forward to more inpiration from you. I can't wait to see Santa Lucia in particular; we celebrate that day with our own Lucia (who needs a new crown this year) and Starboy.

Every time you post one of these I want one. Or three. Or seven. I am not crafty in any way (I make words, and dinner, and a baby who is now a grown man, but not sewing or knitting or ...) anyway, I enjoy seeing the flower babies immensely.

Beth: How lucky you were to play Santa Lucia! Bede and I joke that the reason we're red-shirting Lucia and enrolling her in a third year of kindergarten is so that she can be the oldest girl in her class and play Santa Lucia. (The real reason is more sound and sensible, never fear.)

Anamaria: I'll have to look for that book. I love it that you celebrate Santa Lucia day. We don't have Swedish roots, so we've not grown up with the tradition, but I have every intention of making Lucia bread this year. I made it two years ago with much success.

So lovely! I'm with GraceAnne - I wish I could make such things but I'm pretty pathetic just at sewing the LSG's Girl Scout patches onto her vest. I look forward to the nature table photo!

Even I must say...that is the cutest thing ever.

I have to go do something manly now...

Seriously though, I like it.

K.Jay: Thanks! And never fear, your manliness is not in jeapardy.

It's been a busy week, and I decided it was better not to post unless I actually had something to share. Also, I can't sew and type at the same time (though sometimes I can strum and type in tandem).

That's beautiful. The Waldorf School in Nashville, which I wish so very much I could send my girls to, is having a toy sale this weekend. I bet things like the lovely Ms. Snowdrop Baby will be there.
