Rescue music

Devon T. of Head, Shoulders, Knees and All That says Simple Songs Save Lives. Wow.

I haven't yet taught Lucia how to call 9-1-1, but I'm thinking it might be time to do so. We've been putting information into songs for a good while. Back when I realized that children with names like "Cleo" and "Zoe" would have an easier time learning to spell their names than my daughter with her nine-letter name*, I set her nine-letter moniker to song. I did the same thing with our address and phone number. I've hesitated about teaching her 9-1-1 because she is the sort of child who would obsess about the possibility of something terrible happening. I was also wondering how one would practice dialing 9-1-1 and then I realized that we do indeed have a play phone.

*For newcomers: "Lucia" is my daughter's blog-name.

I find that I have been much more remiss with this child than with her sister who could recite all her vital info. at 2 or so. I suppose I should really start trying harder on the whole address and phone # thing - she knows our names, though - I figure we'd be pretty easy to find from just that. She is not ready to operate the telephone yet, I don't think, but I suppose it is time. Sigh.

Wow. I don't even remember how I knew all of this stuff, but I'm pretty sure it was in a song too -- which is why I still remember the phone number I had when I was four, and my parent's number has changed at least four times since then.

How do you teach a child what a bona fide emergency is, though? That's where I'd have a problem.

Good luck, Moms.
