Lucia knocks on the door every time we go by, but alas, we always come by on market day, and the gnomes are never home:
We have a pine tree in our back yard that would be a perfect residence for gnomes. We've sent out the word. The housing market is difficult right now, and so far, there have been no inquiries about the property. However, I feel confident that we shall have gnomes take up residence in our pine tree before the summer is over. Gnomes make excellent neighbors. They weed gardens and water the plants.
March 29, 2013 update: Since this post, I have received a number of lovely emails from people who have shared links to their own fairy houses/gnome homes. Some people have asked me if I myself make gnome homes. I do not, but I know of other artisans who do. One of my favorite sites is Lucinda Macy's Willodel shop on Etsy. I also enjoy browsing through the shop of Casualee.

That is pure sweetness.
When Frances was little, I used to write tiny little notes to her from Miranda the Fairy. Sometimes they would appear next to her pillow and sometimes she would find them while exploring our garden. Perhaps Lucia would love the idea of tiny notes from a gnome -
e.g.
Dear Lucia,
I have come to live in your garden for a while. I am very shy but I will watch over your garden and I will be peeping at you when you come out to play. Be a good girl.

We have only the naughty tangle faeries that must come and dance in the baby's hair each night. And the ubiquitous tooth and holiday sorts of creatures. We should find more...although I generally take a hard line about keeping the house fey-free. They are so unpredictable.
LSM: Lucia's teacher told me about how one of her colleagues was talking about climing Mt. Rainier with ice-picks and laughing about how the wind fairies tried to knock her off the mountain. Her partner, who was listening in on the conversation, muttered, "You try a stunt like that again and I'LL knock you off the mountain."
The wind-fairies are a mite mischievous. (And fear not, YP, I know how to pronounce "mischievous" correctly.)

Just make sure that the gnomes don't remortgage the property and get in over their heads with an adjutable rate mortgage. They're notorious for that, and the next thing you know they lose the house and you've got a family of ogres in the tree and then 'poof', there goes the neighborhood.
We definitely don't want ogres in the tree.
