Riddleburger's Pumpkin Tutorial

Sam Riddleburger and Cece Bell have the definitive tutorial on how to carve pumpkins. Sam says, "People keep bumping into my site looking for templates. People, templates stink. Templates are only for people who lack confidence in their own creativity. This lesson will empower you to make your OWN pumpkin."

I for one lack confidence in my own creativity when it comes to pumpkin-carving. Then again, the closest I've come to carving a pumpkin has been this. I'm a paper-person. As Carl Sandburg says, "Paper people like to meet other paper people."

Will we? Won't we?

Just the colors in that photograph are SO BEAUTIFUL. I miss autumn. I think we're having winter here.

I don't think we're having pumpkins this year... people don't seem to grow them in the UK, and I am feeling stubborn about getting them from ...oh, Egypt or wherever else they import them. Traditionally, people carve... turnips.

Guess what I'm doing...

TadMack: I'm a fan of turnip carving. Turnips are much smaller than jack-o-lantern pumpkins and there isn't pressure to do anything with them but make them into lanterns. One of the oft-told stories in Lucia's school involves a gnome, a turnip, and a bunch of animals. (It's the one where everyone pulls and pulls and pulls, but there's no success until the gnome pops up and wonders what's going on.)

Wait a second. I thought I just commented. Try again.

Lucia looks so much like you in the picture. Lovely.

I have no fancy carving skills but we still love our simple jack-o-lanterns. Anyone can do a simple one with triangle features, if they can be trusted with knives....this year we did buy some potato-head parts to also make a pirate.

HWM: Thanks! I didn't realize until afterward that we're both wearing sunglasses (or in Lucia's case, glasses that turn into sunglasses).

LSM: I cannot be trusted with knives.

Thanks for the note. If there's one thing I've grasped from reading your blog for a while now, it's that you def. have the creativity needed to carve a fun pumpkin!

In fact, it's not even creativity as much a resourcefulness. You plunge in with a cut then have to figure out how to make that a mouth or an eye or a whatnot.

I totally would trust you with a knife.
