Storytelling for a song

Saturday night, Bede and I attended the gala auction to benefit Lucia's school. My storytelling services were up for the silent auction as a 30 minute performance for a birthday party. At first, I was concerned that no one would bid on my services. The first time I passed by my display, no one had placed any bids on the sheet.

"Do you think we should start off the bidding?" Bede asked.

"No!" I said. "That would be like my mother bidding on my artwork because she thought no one else would buy it."

By the end, there were a number of bids, and someone got me for the bargain price of $43.00. I found out from friends of mine that they attempted to jump-start the bidding on their own offer to do airport-taxi service, and ended up winning the bid.

During the live part of the auction, I got to hold the number. I held up our number so the auctioneer could see it, but didn't put it down quickly enough. After I won a 5 day vacation spot on Vancouver Island, Bede insisted he hold the number. We didn't bid on anything else in the live auction, though we did chip in for part of a 28 pound salmon. When we cook it, you're invited to help us eat it.

At my first auction I wound up with some stuff I didn't really want that badly. Those auctioneers move quick, and it's against the rules to say "But...but..but" after you've won.

Limpy99: I think that's why I like proxy-bidding so much. There's no one looking over my shoulder and shouting prices at me.

I am hoping that the family who won your storytelling gig for $43 could not have afforded it otherwise. It reminds me of Madeleine L'Engle's Wrinkle in Time having been rejected 43 times (or some such number. Wouldn't it be a hoot if both numbers were the same?)

Anon-- I am hoping for the same thing as well! I did put a notice in the school newsletter that my rates were $80 for 1/2 hour, but that I would be willing to use the barter system for school parents. Maybe I'll get some freshly-laid eggs or lazure painting lessons as a result.

Hope you have some great recipes for all that salmon!
