Soundtrack of a Quasi-Fictitious Life

When I was a teenager, I made music mixes on cassette tapes. Now, I make music mixes on compact discs. I am resisting the temptations of iPods (easy to do when one lives on a slender budget).

Here is the sountrack to the film of the quasi-fictitious early life of Alkelda the Gleeful, called "Hard Luck Child." Obviously, this was before she became Gleeful, when she was merely Alkelda the Grouchy. Some of these songs are much cooler than A the G while others are unabashedly guilty pleasures.

By the way, today I am 33 1/3 years old. Bede is hosting a cocktail party in my honor. A "hard luck child" I am not.

Addendum: I am actually 33 1/4 today. Bede is threatening to cancel my party.

1) Orphan Girl—Emmylou Harris (originally by Gillian Welch)

2) Alive and Kicking—Simple Minds

3) As a Child—Suzanne Vega

4) I Know My Love—Chieftains and Corrs

5) I Asked for Water (He Gave Me Gasoline)—Lucinda Williams (originally by Howlin Wolf)

6) Help Me Mary—Liz Phair

7) Pa Janvier, Laisse-moi m'en Aller—Patty Griffin

8) Enola Gay—OMD

9) Everybody Knows—Concrete Blonde (originally by Leonard Cohen)

10) Nobody’s Fault But Mine—Jimmy Page and Robert Plant (originally by Led Zeppelin, but whom do you think wrote the song anyway?)

11) True Friends--Shannon Curfman

12) Woke Up This Morning—A3

13) These Boots Are Made For Walking--Nancy Sinatra

14) Gratitude--Oingo Boingo

15) Everything is Free--Gillian Welch

16) Drive--Joe 90

17) The Bug--Dire Straits

Thanks!
Just now, I realized to my chagrin that July 28 actually is my 33 1/3 birthday. (Today is my 33 1/4) I think I'm going to keep that discovery very, very quiet. People are coming over tonight, after all. Perhaps I'll wait until after they've had a few drinks before telling them of my error.

Current mood: embarrassed (but secretly gleeful)

You know, I thought so, but chalked it up to my memory not working so well after 17 or 18 years..

Your secret is safe with me! I'm 3,000 miles away and don't know any of your friends! (Though I see Orcinus links to Tony Dowler. But he doesn't know me, anyway.)

Thanks! Unfortunately, my secret is not safe with me. I'll have to have another party next month. I am thinking of asking people to bring their favorite cds so I can burn songs onto a commemorative 33 1/3 mix cd. We'll have to supply our own crackling noises, too.

What a party! We're such a bunch of nerds. We ended up playing a demo version of Universalis with the theme "Jane Austen in Space." I would like to point out that despite having the reputation for being the peacenik of the group, I was the one who brought up most of the violent aspects of the game, and was challenged each time.

Are we nerds or geeks? See Oxford English Cat and Girl and decide for yourselves!

Maureen,
I'm glad! I was initially skeptical of the mix cd but now I'm an addict.

Phil--
I think we have the potential to be both.

I think it's funny that my cocktail party ended up being the game night you didn't have Saturday night.

Bede is going to post the notes on his website, and I'll link to them in the hopes that others will be inspired (or disgusted) enough to start their own Universalis gigs.

You're welcome. It was good to stumble across Tonsil in my search for storytelling blogs.
