Guitar Hero vs. Guitar Dilettante

Last night, we went over to some friends' house for dinner. The friends had a Wii set up, and when I found out that they had Guitar Hero, I admitted I'd been curious about the game. Bede is the gamer, not I, so I wasn't surprised that he did a lot better at the game than I did. After 10 minutes of hitting colored buttons to play "I Wanna Be Sedated" and "Smoke on the Water," a little nagging thought nudged me and said, "You know, this game isn't making you a better guitar player."

"I know," I replied to the little thought. "What I'd really like is an electric guitar, but there's no way I could ever justify the expense or find room in my house."

"But Blogapotamus Rex's husband, the Rock Star, managed to fit 15 guitars on a houseboat," the little thought reminded me.

"Yeah," I said, "but the Rock Star was in a band that played actual concerts, plus he's actually pretty good. Professional guitarists need lots of guitars!"

The little thought had no answer for that. After all, the little thought had no money to offer to fund my hobbies.

That's the problem with little thoughts. great ideas, short on capital.

Yes, curse those little thoughts sometimes.

I've never heard of that game. Funny.

I think you should have an electric guitar. I am here to support the little thoughts...

Just make it something you set aside $$ for -- just a little one can't be that expensive, can it? Okay, and then there's the amps... but you already have speakers, probably... and you can get a little Tuff-Shed and play in the backyard...

(Okay, now I've gone from support to being the little guy with the horns on your other shoulder. I just think since you already had the rock star look and wardrobe, you may as well get the guitar...)

TadMack: You are funny! Thanks for your support of the little thoughts. The thing is, I want to save up for the "Farida" guitar, and I suspect I would do better to borrow someone else's electric guitar from time to time (though my brother likes to play a seven string).

Jules: Those little thoughts have gotten me into trouble many a time.

Limpy99: Yeah, my little thoughts never have any great money-making ideas. "Give a puppet show!" and Organize a circus in your basement!" are the sorts of things that crop up.

My little thought is whispering, "craigslist."

Out there in Seattle-land there must be dozens of Rock Stars living on houseboats and looking to downsize their collection of 15 guitars down to, say, 10. Perhaps you can get one on the cheap.

Goddess: Yes! That does it. I'm forwarding this post onto Ulric, and begging him to help me choose a guitar. Ulric is both discerning and cheap. ;)

A friend of mine is currently working her way through Guitar Hero III and enjoying it a lot.

Never ignore your little thoughts. Yes, they may be short on capital, but they are never short on creativity. Plus, they always tell us what we really want.

YAY, Alkelda! Waiting to hear when the Craigslist guitar is purchased. Good one, Clarity Goddess!
