The Magdalene Review

Lesa Bellevie, founder of Magdalene.org and author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Mary Magdalene, now has a new blog: The Magdalene Review.

Bellevie's personal manifesto states (among other things), "I believe it is important to make a distinction between truth and fact." Truth and fact are not mutually exclusive concepts, but are too often muddled into one confusing mess. Make no mistake: I am not opposed to confusing messes. However, I like to keep my options open to allow learning to take place. What I appreciate most about Bellevie's scholarship is her devotion to research and knowledge for its own sake, and not to fulfill some preconceived notion or agenda about Mary Magdalene. (By the way, Lesa, I think that by now you've achieved a "common-law" scholarly degree. You've certainly earned it with the research alone.) I am pleased to add The Magdalene Review to my Spinners blogroll.

Wow. That's a lot of knowledge on Mary Magdalene. I've always liked her, though now I'm not sure I meant her. Always considered naming a daughter Magdalena, Maggie for short, maybe, but I probably won't. I was thinking a lot about Mary, the sister of Martha over the Thanksgiving holiday in the bustle at home when my sister was kind of annoyed when I had to nurse my baby, etc. when there was lots of cooking/cleaning to be done...first time I'd seen myself on that side of the story. Makes me want to go read about all the Mary's and other women again. When I was a child in Catholic school, the nuns told us that the Gospel of Luke contained more about women than the other gospels because Luke was Greek and the Greeks respected women more.

Hi Lone Star Ma!
I always thought Martha got the short end of the stick, too. Bede's mother feels the same. Of course, when it comes down to choosing whether to wash dishes or write a story, I'm full of flights of fancy. (Actually, the opposite is true-- when I know I need to sit down to write a story, that's exactly when I realize that the laundry has to be done and perhaps I should sort the pasta in my pantry. Hah!)

I wonder why Miriam became "Mary" in the New Testament.

Mary Magdelene has always fascinated me. No matter what my beliefs are, I DO believe a man named Jesus walked this earth and many of his biblical followers were real people. I believe MM was one of those followers. Her innocence, despite her...ummm...profession, always makes me smile, and sometimes weep, as well. This is very fascinating, indeed.
