Circus lad and lady in the Waldorf style

In the past three days, I've made two circus figures for my daughter's class auction project. The little boy has moveable arms and legs, and the lady has moveable arms. I used two books for patterns and instructions:

Feltcraft: Making Dolls, Gifts and Toys, by Petra Berger
Making Flower Children, by Sybille Adolphi

My next planned figure is either harlequin-style clown, as contemporary American clowns generally are not beautiful (although this one is pleasant) or a lady on a horse. We shall see. In any case, I can't type and sew at the same time!

OK, you! Stop with all the talentedness and stuff!

Happy New Year to all the Saints and Spinners.

Oh, please go with the Harlequin and NOT the American clown. American clowns are just... scary. These are so cute!!

American clowns are scary. I have many stories about this.

Your dolls are lovely! And you are sort of reaching scary heights of talented perfection here. Didn't you once say that you make your own yogurt? I'm not worthy...

Lori Goddess: Oh pshaw! Happy New Year to you too.

TadMack: Fear not (literally), I will do the harlequin and not the American clown. I concur with you. I am sure that someday, some clown with a blog is going to show up here and ream me out for fanning the flames of coulrphobia.

LSM: Your comment came in after I published mine! I remember in an earlier post you contemplated clown camp before deciding it wasn't a good idea. The books I recommended above really are key for this new level of skill. Earlier attempts was my trying to figure out everything from scratch. And yes, I make my own yogurt, but really, I use an electric incubator, so it takes out all of the guesswork.

I don't even know what that means...

LSM: I had a link! "Coulrophobia" is the fear of clowns.

I meant the incubating thing, you domestic wonder!

LSM: Oh! Okay. YoGourmet has a contraption whereby after one warms the milk and puts in the yogurt starter, the container sits in a bath of warm water for however many hours is appropriate (4 hours for yogurt starter from a box, 6-8 hours when it's from a "yogurt cake" from my freezer). I wrote out a list of guidelines for one of my listservs-- if you ever get the yen to make yogurt, I'd be glad to send it to you.

Radio silence. But thanks(:

Happy New Year, Farida!

I say go with the clown, and make his face look like Tim Curry from IT. Because if clowns are scary anyway, why not go nuts?

Nice figures, btw. Moveable arms and legs? Very cool. But can they do the kung-fu grip?

Timothy: Audience is key. A teen audience might kvell to a scary clown, but since whomever ends up buying the circus tent with figures will probably have young children, I'd like to keep the nightmares at bay! There's enough horror in the world without me adding to it. I suspect I'm making the arms too short for the kung-fu grip... I need to work on that. I was trying to avoid gorilla arms.
