Galanthus nivalis*

Lucia's Little One from her kindergarten class is home for the holidays. The Little Ones are not dollies, as Lucia has corrected me a number of times, but friends who have journeyed from the Little One Meadow to visit the kindergarten. Each Little One chooses a kindergartener to be his or her special friend. Lucia waited a long time for her Little One to arrive and choose her, and a few days before vacation, Snowdrop showed up.

Here is a picture of Snowdrop next to her little pouch that Lucia sometimes wears around her neck. I attempted to embroider a snowdrop on the heart, first without any guidance whatsoever, and then with the aid of an embroidery book. I heartily recommend the use of an embroidery book.

If you're wondering why there's no face embroidered on the doll Little One, it's to allow for the imagination of the child to fill in the features. In the Waldorf tradition, dollies for very young children have no facial features. Ironically, when Lucia was younger, she didn't care for those kinds of dollies, but likes them now. Go figure.

*Galanthus nivalis is the Latin name for snowdrop.

Lucia's school sounds so caring and loving. Sweet doll and lovely pouch. You did a great job embroidering the snowdrop on the heart. Lucia must love it.

Lucia is one lucky girl. That brought a tear to my eye, mean it. xo

HWM: Thanks! Lucia is playing with Snowdrop and the dollies right now, demanding "silk stories."

Lady K: It almost makes one want to revisit childhood, doesn't it? I did say "almost!" :)

I love Waldorf dolls. Sass has one that's been a long-term favorite.

Hello, Akelda, Gleeful is a wonderful thing to be! I wish we were not so far apart (geographically :)) so my children and I could hear your stories! Thank you so much for visiting my blog, and taking the time to write a comment. Your daughter's Snowdrop Little One is lovely. Did you make it for her? I am so envious of your apparent proximity to a Waldorf school! I enjoyed visiting your blog and will be back. By the way, I sometimes sell my flower dolls in my Etsy shop, and hope to put up a few by Easter. I also would take a special order if you want a Snowdrop... But maybe you want to make it yourself! Check in if you like, or let me know if you want some advice. Have a great weekend!

Celandine: Thanks so much for returning the blog visit! My daughter's teacher made her Snowdrop Little One for her. I have bookmarked your blog and I will indeed be checking in from time to time to see how your flower dolls are progressing. I am sorely tempted to request a Snowdrop doll, except that I don't want it to be a "rival" for the Little One as it were. :) I think I definitely need to make a felt snowdrop, though.
