May Faire celebration

May-pole dance at Lucia's school

Flowers in our hair

THE MAY-POLE
by Robert Herrick

The May-pole is up,
Now give me the cup,
I'll drink to the garlands around it ;
But first unto those
Whose hands did compose
The glory of flowers that crown'd it.

A health to my girls,
Whose husbands may earls
Or lords be, granting my wishes,
And when that ye wed
To the bridal bed,
Then multiply all, like to fishes.

Note to my daughter: please, please wait a good while before you indulge in the 2nd paragraph verse. I'm in no hurry for you to grow up more quickly than you already are.

(Lucia turns 4 on May 10.)

That's not a paragraph - it is a verse! And another thing - that sixties song went - "If you're going to San Francisco be sure to wear some flowers in your hair" NOT goddam Seattle for Chrissake! SAN FRANCISCO!
Nice to see that the very English Maypole tradition is still revered in the far flung corners of our former Empire! Happy May Day!

YP: What would I do without your indespensible editing skills? Never MIND that I was almost late for church because I wanted to leave you with some Sunday entertainment and rushed the job. No, no.

Hah!

You're just jealous because you want to be in Seattle. Admit it. And O, to be in England, now that May is there...

Schelle: They're quite fun!

Jealousy is a gnawing and bitter condition that is sometimes experienced by lesser mortals than I... It is rather like peevishness! Nobody needs to visit Seattle as you can buy Starbucks anywhere now! Earlier, we pinched Jimi Hendrix from you and turned him into a guitar god.

YP: Silly man! Coffee-loving Seattlites don't drink Starbucks any more than Yorkshiremen eat Thomas' English Muffins.
