Other People's Book Reviews

Here are three chapter-books I've read recently based upon fellow bloggers' reviews:

Emma-Jean Lazarus Fell Out of a Tree—Lauren Tarshis
Reviewer: Fuse Number 8

The Earth, My Butt and Other Big Round Things--Carolyn Mackler
Reviewer: HipWriterMama

Note: One of the highlights for me was the main character's Thanksgiving visit from New York to Seattle.

Life as We Knew It--Susan Beth Pfeffer
Reviewer: Jen Robinson

Also, don't miss out on a review of two picture-books from Seven Impossible Things Before Breakfast:
The Wish and A Seed is Sleepy
Reviewer: Jules of 7Imp

Note: Both of these picture-books feature sunflowers prominently (as if sunflowers could be anything but prominent). Ever since she was a baby, Lucia has been my "Sunflower Girl." She's long-legged and beautiful. By the time she's a teenager, she will probably be taller than I. She's almost four years old, and already she's more than half my height.

Beautiful picture. I hope you have this one in a nice frame. Lucia looks like you! Don't you just love it! Okay, so did you like the book?

HipWriterMama: I did indeed like the book. At first I wasn't sure, because things were going so horribly wrong. But then, I was so proud of Virginia for standing up to everyone. I appreciated how flawed the parents were, and that those flaws didn't go away, but Virginia was able to accept her parents finally while keeping her ground on the important things. I'm glad she told her father not to comment on her body anymore. I'm glad that things were resolved in a realistic BUT positive way. Realistic doesn't have to mean "big time downer."

I'd also like to mention that I approve of the fashion-makeovers. They're definitely NOT like the "Princess Diaries," "She's All That," or "Breakfast Club." Hurrah!

What a beautiful photo! Thanks for linking to my review. I hope that you enjoyed the book (though I'm sure it's more disturbing than, say, the sunflower picture books...).

WOW. You are sure giving me plenty to do while I'm recuperating!

That photo is SO CUTE! Lucia looks so much like you! I have a 10-year-old niece who is already 1/2 inch TALLER than I. hee hee! I think I was a dwarf (excuse me..."little person") in a past life.

Thanks for the link, too.

Jules and Jen--Thanks for stopping by!

Lady K-- I've found out that the term most preferred is "people with dwarfism." People also have giganticism, too-- I suspect Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) has it. My favorite book that has a character with dwarfism is Stones From the River. Check it out-- Trudi, the main character, is also a librarian.:)

Lovely photo.

Sometimes I wonder if the Lone Star Baby is a person with dwarfism, but no doctor has yet suggested it in all their myriad tests and I am only now starting to think she is just on the small side instead as she has grown some.

I did not like that book. I remember it well - it was well-written, but I found it way too depressing.
