Interview Meme

MotherReader posted an interview meme that she had received from a wrung sponge. Here are the interview questions and my answers:

1)What is your favorite quote?

“Courage!” he said and pointed toward the land...

--Alfred, Lord Tennyson, "The Lotus-Eaters." It’s a line I tell myself when I need it (which is often).

2)How would you spend 1500 dollars you won in a radio contest?

Boring answer: I’d get the outside of our house repainted. Fun answer: I’d use it for the long-overdue weekend getaway. Really fun answer: Balloon rides for everyone!

3) Where do you like to go to get away from it all?

I like to walk by the edge of the water. I haven’t done this in a long time. I usually take out my guitar in order to get some rest from my nagging thoughts.

4) If you had the complete attention of everyone in the United States, but only for 30 seconds, what would you say?

I think I’d need a month to work on this one. I’d want to be both humorous and serious, to say something that mattered without people tuning me out. It would be something to the effect of, “Can we get a grip already, and deal with what’s important, instead of petty squabbles over ideological issues that don’t actually have any bearings on our lives?”

5) Why did you choose your blog name and signature name?

“Saints and Spinners” (not “Sinners” as is the common typo, though it's probably just as accurate!) comes from a conversation I had with a parent after a storytelling gig. I’d mentioned something about how many stories there were that involved sewing, spinning, and weaving. Somehow, we ended up talking about the lives of the saints and the interesting stories they had. I said, “I should do a program that’s entirely sewing stories and saints’ stories. I could call it ‘Saints and Spinners.’” My blog name, “Alkelda” is named after the saint whose commemoration day is my birthday. A few years ago, I was a guest-player in a Star Wars role-playing game. I chose "Alkelda" as the name of my character, a
Twi’lek Jedi. I only played that one game, but the name stuck. “The Gleeful” refers to my tendency to play harmless tricks primarily to make the recipients laugh. I’m a melancholy person with a streak of optimism and silliness.

Dear Readers: If you would like to answer 5 of my questions on your own blog, let me know in the comments, and I’ll write up an interview for you.

Can you believe I'm still sick? I'm incredulous, myself. I haven't practiced guitar in 5 days. The cough and chills aren't as big a deal as the all-over body-ache that gets worse when I try to do something productive. As Monkey would say, "Please send bananas." In my case, please send muscle relaxants.

And of course, I mispelled your blog name linking here - even though I knew, I knew, what it was. Oh well.

I love the "balloon rides for everyone!" It reminds me, didn't you submit the "Everyone gets ice cream!" new cliche on Defective Yeti?

Thanks for the back story on your name, both names really.

MotherReader: As you have probably guessed, you're not the first one to note the "sinner" in "spinners." Thanks for doing this interview meme. And yes, you are correct in that I submitted the "Everyone gets ice cream" cliche-nouveau to Defective Yeti. I really hope that I just bump into Defective Yeti someday. Maybe he'll bring Squiggle to one of my storytimes, and I'll jump up and down, cheering, "Hey, everyone, look, it's Matthew Baldwin, pretty okay guy!" Your blog was on my radar before, but seeing the link to Defective Yeti did indeed score you a new reader.

Thin thighs for everyone.

Anonymous, you can't fool me. I know exactly who you are. You are the one who introduced me to the Sylvia comics.

I loved the story of how you chose your blog name and signature name. Alkelda the Gleeful just makes me smile. Thanks.

I know a great muscle relaxant but as you have ticked me off about my mischief before, I had better not mention this activity. I don't wish to be blacklisted and banned from your blog! Get well soon - well pretty soon - well this month maybe - in other words, get well some time before Christmas!

HipWriterMama: Thanks! I'm enjoying your blog, by the way.

YPYou couldn't just send me a bottle of whiskey?! Thanks for your well-wishes. I'm actually feeling better today, though I know now not to push it. I was feeling better on Sunday... and then I pushed it.

Hmm, if you like to walk along the edge of the water, perhaps I should be recruiting you instead of Bede for my walk along the Seattle Lake Washington shoreline. It's only about 20 miles...

Saints and Spinners said...

Phil: I'm game. I'd have to work up to it, though. The longest I've ever walked at once has been 7 miles.

Count me in too. I'll do an interview meme.

BlueMamma and HipWriterMama: Great! I'll have the interview questions up by Friday, if not before.

Now I'm getting nervous. Don't strain yourself too much on this one...Feeling better is far more important than coming up with tough questions. Stay warm!

Count me in...but don't embarass me! I hope you feel better soon! Sounds like the flu...have you tried tamiflu? Actually those homeopathic crystals of oscillo-whatsit controlled my symptoms rather well once, although I do not officially believe in homeopathy.

YP: I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings when I called you a pervert. I was just playing. I'm an American - we're rude.

HipWriterMama: No worries! But you inadvertently remind me that I still have a puppet-show in post-production. Ah, funding, funding.:)

LSM: So, you don't want embarassing questions, eh? I'll try to remember not to ask anything about zits or suspicious toenail growths. Seriously, though, I'm totally over my asking embarassing questions phase. At least, I hope I am. My agreement with my audience (stated or unspoken) is that they participate in my stories, and I won't embarass them. It's a good deal.

YP is a tough chap from Sheffield who secretly thinks that flowers and moonrises are pretty. Can you believe it?
