Yip-Yip Hurray For a Television Break

A diversion:

Yesterday, Brad the Gorilla was griping about how some Sesame Street characters never got their due. He is particularly disgusted with a character who shall not be mentioned (this character's lawyers are meaner than weasels in a coal mine), but to whom Brad refers as "an overrated clump of bright red fur."

"Where are the Yip-Yip Martians when we need them?" he complained. "Once again, the bright and flashy players get all of the attention, while the deceptively simple brilliance of the supporting actors is all but forgotten."

I was awake around 4 am this morning (yucky dreams) when I discovered these two skits starring the Yip-Yip Martians:

Yip Yip Martians Meet the Telephone

Yip Yip Martians Meet the Computer

There you go, Brad. Have a little patience while the video clips load. If anyone finds other clips of the Yip-Yip Martians, please send them to Brad at his email address: brad [PERIOD] the [PERIOD] gorilla [SHIFT KEY + 2 KEY] gmail [PERIOD] com.

I've always loved puppets of any kind. I remember having one of those bird things on the crisscrossed sticks, where you could make him walk, move his head or flap his wings. I was probably 5 or 6. I took him apart to see how he walked, once, and managed to get him back together (he didn't walk after that, but I DID put him back together...sorta). I miss the yip-yips and many of those from when we were kids. One of my all-time favorite puppets, though, was Beaker. Beaker was the absolute coolest and I always wanted to be able to talk like him. I was young, okay? Now I know all I have to do is hit the tequila and I can talk like Beaker - or the Yip-Yips, even - all too well.

Friday: I can understand wanting to talk like Beaker! :) I wanted to talk like Janice, but I didn't dare.

ABCGirl: I have only a faint memory of the Yip-Yips meeting the grandfather clock. What I wish we could do with the skits is pick and choose the ones we want for our DVD. In the meantime, check out this link for a few classic bits.

I loved the Yip Yip Martians. So much so that I didn't even have to view the videos, I can picture the skit almost word for word. Ok, there weren't that many words but you get the idea.

Does Lucia like the red one who must not be named? My two year old LOVES him.

Nonny: I'm in trouble. Ever since I stumbled upon the videos, I've been spontaneously uttering, "Yip yip" instead of "Yes." Help! Lucia has not yet seen the Yip-Yips OR the red one who must be named on video. I confess, since we don't have a tv (thanks to Brad and one of his infamous tempers), I have a lot of control over what Lucia sees. She likes Bert and Ernie, and has seen pictures of Elmo, but hasn't seen Elmo in action. I'm sure if she did, she would love Elmo. Perhaps that is how she will rebel against her parents. I think of Elmo as very Generation Y.

Yip-yip (uh-huh, uh-huh).

Lady K and Galetea-- You're very welcome. I've been getting a kick out of reviewing some of the old clips. I especially like the one of Ernie eating cake, telling Bert that a monster might have come in and eaten the cake, shaken the crumbs on the plate, and then ordered Ernie to hold the fork and napkin, only to have exactly that happen in the next scene.

Speaking of television, I was sitting here at Bede's computer, twiddling my thumbs, when a monster barged into the room, took over the computer, downloaded the current season of Lost onto Bede's computer via iTunes, and ran away. I barely had time to draw breath.
